I would like to know what you think about “action” in a flamenco guitar and what kind of strings you would suggest to use (high tension? Low tension? Flamenco strings or simply classical like strings? Thank you👍🏻
I'm sure there are people here with more insight than I have, but I think strings and set up are a more of a matter of personal preference then "right" or "wrong." Typically speaking, Flamenco guitars have a lower action (if it was built as a Flamenco guitar, it will likely have a straighter neck than a traditional classical guitar, this will result in a lower action without you having to do anything). Sometime classical guitar players like a ridiculously high action. That's probably not the best for Flamenco, but I tend to think there's a pretty wide range of "acceptable" action height.
Strings are very much a personal preference, and will likely vary from guitar to guitar. I would recommend just trying a lot of different brands and tensions to find what works for you. I started nylon guitar playing as a classical guitarist, and always played with hard tension strings. After I started playing more flamenco, I switched to standard tension just to "try it out" and have found that standard tension works well for me.
I mostly second all of what Landon said. If you're used to a classical setup then your flamenco setup will be a bit lower, but it does indeed fall into a wide range. A lot of it has to do with how much resistance you want/need for your right hand (and if you like a lot of resistance, is it then too much for your left hand?) Also the lower you go the more buzz you're likely to get, so again it's about how much is too much and what's just right for you.
As for strings, I've always used LaBella classical strings. I feel like I hear the guitar and not the string with them, and also they're not very expensive :) Lately I've been using the Pepe Romero Jr. strings, which are made by LaBella but have different trebles than the 2001's I've played most of my life. I like a heavier tension string in general, but each guitar is different, so I have one guitar that needs light tension strings to feel like most guitars feel will heavy tension.
The good news is that experimenting with strings is fun, and you never know what might sound amazing on your particular guitar. (Also, don't assume that a really expensive set of strings is going to change your guitar's sound. It never really does...)
Having said all that, I'm curious to hear everyone's experience with strings. Let me know what you guys like or don't!
I recently bought a medium/low end flamenco guitar from “Ortega”. It comes with classical D’Addario middle tension and they work fine for now. I will try different brands and tension levels and will let you know my impressions. Thanks again for your suggestions👍🏻
Hola Kai y amigos!
For the last year or so, I have been using Savarez Tomatito strings normal/standard tension on my 2002 Vincente Carillo Flamenca Blanca. Every string has a bright and resonant tone, trebles and bases. The projection is bright and clear.
I purchase them from Strings by Mail. I tried some expensive Hannabach strings and they were extremely dull sounding and had no projection.
I am very satisfied with not only the tonal quality of the Tomatito strings but their longevity.
Hi,there! I’m using Tomatito standard too and I’m really satisfied. I’m curious to try the high tension ones... have you ever tried them?
Never tried the high tension strings, but I am tempted to try them. I’ll let you know when I am ready to change my strings and will put on a set of these Tomatito HT strings.
I just inherited an amazing 1969 Bernardo Rico Flamenco Blanca. After cleaning it up, I put on a set of Aquila Granato flamenco strings(the red ones). the whole set is spectacular. The guitar weighs ~3lbs and just sings. And I'm getting used to the fiction pegs.
