Hi Kai - Can you please provide some color as to your methods/practice in terms of remembering falsetas by memory. I find my self jumping from one to the other in different palos and don't seem to solidify any. Do you have a set practice schedule that works? How do you divide time learning new ones and practice old ones? How much time do you dedicate to writing your own?
Thank you and I look forward to your reply.
Hey Luis - I think that the most important part of remembering material is really knowing it when you're away from the guitar. If you can hum/sing a falseta chances are you're going to remember it better. To get to really memorize it even better you can hum/sing and try to picture what your fingers are doing. I do this as I fall asleep sometimes and I either learn the music even better or I just fall asleep faster :) (And I do it with music I've played for years and years just to make sure I really know it in my brain as well as my hands sometimes). And knowing it consciously like this, rather than relying on muscle memory, comes in really handy if you get distracted while playing and your fingers forget what they're doing!
But I think your answer may be in your question - you jump around before solidifying any material. I have absolutely no objection to jumping around various Palos, but if you're having trouble memorizing it might really help if you give yourself time to at least learn one thing well before moving on. Maybe pick one falseta you love, and try to stay with it until you have it cold, then go on to the next thing.
I don't have a schedule, really. I only learn new material these days if I'm really in love with it (which usually means I've already memorized it because I've been listening to it non-stop), if it it's something new I don't yet understand, or if I need to for teaching. otherwise I prefer to spend my time writing my own stuff. But this is after a lifetime of learning material, so I already have hundreds and hundreds of falsetas memorized. I don't think I'd be able to write my own stuff if I hadn't learned all of those falsetas first back in the day, which brings us back to the top!
Let me know if any of this helps!
Cheers,
Kai
